7 Unforgettable Experiences at Mandai River Wonders Singapore
I think I should not have posted the video at the beginning of this post because it shows what is so special about the River Wonder in Singapore. I am afraid you may not read this post till the end!
Furthermore, I noticed a big aquarium that showed some very rare fish species. I then spotted a beautiful brown bear and a cute panda. I am sure every visitor to this amazing tourist attraction in Singapore would thoroughly enjoy a lazy river safari.
The narrow river flows around the zoo, where I saw a couple of new species of primates. It can accommodate a small boat with about 6 passengers.
I think the information up to this point itself is alluring, and you are already visualizing how your family members would enjoy seeing around the River Wonders.
Let me elaborate further about these ultimate attractions in Singapore that continue their quest to become the number one ranked in the list of the best countries for tourists.
Where the River Wonders is located?
The river is the vein of this amusement park. It is the only river-themed wildlife and marine life park in the world.
Your destination to buy a train or bus ticket should be purchased up to the Mandai Wildlife Reserve.
Singapore’s intercity transportation is the most convenient in the world. You can get maps in any shop. Taxis are abundantly available. Taxi drivers are polite and very honest.
Mandai Wildlife Reserve may be reached in about 60 minutes from your hotel assuming, you would stay in the center of the city.
How much time do you need to fully see all the attractions in the River Wonders?
As a nature lover, I would spend 5 hours. I enjoy seeing birds especially. In addition, I love ‘people watching’.
For a normal visitor, I guess three hours would be sufficient.
How many animals are in the open zoo?
When you have watched the video, you would have guessed the zoo is a mini one that may house about 100 animals and bids. I too thought so.
How wrong am I?
The total number of animals, and birds are numbering nearly a staggering eleven thousand!
The park’s developers’ prime idea was to show the maximum number of wildlife that live near a river bed.
Riverside habitat must have been the theme of the Mandai Wildlife Reserve.
Highlights of the River Wonders:
-
Amazon Forest
This is one of the several zones that show you wildlife, and marine life that thrive in the Amazon rainforest.
Imagine seeing many of the exotic animals, birds, fish, amphibians, and reptiles that live exclusively in the Amazonian forests, right here in Singapore.
You need not spend so much money and time to go to South America to enter the thick jungles of Amazon.
Trivia:
Brazil is hosting nearly 60 % of the Amazon forests. Other countries where you can enjoy Amazon river safari include Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador.
Here in Singapore, the River Wonders’ maximum number of visitors is to the huge, freshwater aquarium. This is to highlight the marine life that thrives in the freshwater rivers only.
Similar to the friendly nature of dolphins, the river otters that you can see here are also playful.
Giant Panda Forest.
This is another eco zone in Mandai Wildlife Reserve.
Generally, we all have seen cute small pandas in films. But the giant pandas are too wild to tame and make a film. Contrary to the common belief, these giant pandas are native to China and not Australia.
Actually, pandas belong to a species of bear. Incredibly, these black and white bears are pure vegetarian; their primary diet is bamboo.
Do you know the female giant pandas are called Jiajia?
Singapore Zoo
The much-celebrated zoo in Singapore is part of the Mandai Wildlife Reserve.
Not only the Singapore zoo but the following wildlife parks are also part of the Mandai Wildlife Reserve.
- Bird Paradise
- Night Safari
- River Wonders
So, if you buy a ticket at the entrance of the Mandai Wildife Park, you can also see the zoo through the river safari and also stay until dark and enjoy the most thrilling ‘night safari’ that has no match even in South Africa or Kenya’s Maasai Mara, Africa’s number one game destination.
The Singapore Zoo is a must-see attraction. It houses more than 2500 animals and birds belonging to a large 315 species!
Coming back to the River Wonders, one of the most striking birds that feeds on freshwater fishes is the Violet Turaco.
Man, what a big bird it is!
Another beautiful bird is the Ringed Teal.
Other attractive birds in the River Wonders include:
- Spoonbill with a large black spoon as its beak
- Spotted Whistling Duck
- The attractive Painted Stork
- The elegant Flamingo
- Macaw
The Caribbean Flamingo is a rare sight.
You can watch these birds and several more plus, hundreds of fish species in different rivers of the world such as:
- Congo River
- Mekong River
- Nile River
- Mary River
- Ganges River
- Yangtze River
The list of fish, ducks, birds, and animals is endless, and you can watch without a guide in the River Wonders.
More than 5 species of monkeys would certainly catch your attention.
Golden-head Lion Tamarin
If you don’t mind having a look at snakes, there is an Anaconda, mate! And, it’s green in color. A Green Anaconda will definitely warrant a look by every visitor.
Amazon Flooded Forest.
Floods in the Amazon River are quite frequent, and they are said to be quite destructive. When the Amazon Forests receive torrential rains, even trees up to 10 feet height get submerged.
You can watch the same effect here in the River Wonders Theme Park.
Feed the Fish
Daily, at a particular time, you can follow an ‘aquarist’ who will begin to explain the habitat, food etc of different kinds of fish species.
The interesting tour will start at 2.15 pm from the Congo River aquarium, where the star attraction is the elephant nose fish.
The River Feed excursion will end at the Mekong River aquarium. Her stories are so engaging that you will never say the aquarium experience is dull and drab.
At a few places, you are allowed to feed certain fish species.
This is truly a River Theme Park-eh? This session is called, “Keeper Talk”. I think it means the aquarium keeper talks about marine life in Mandai River Wonders.
More activities
There are several interactive activities involving the children, giving them an opportunity to win prizes.
A few of the activities include:
- Ranger Buddies Quest
- Wildlife Explorer Camp (It involves going around the three main parks that are the River Wonders, the Singapore Zoo, and the Bird Paradise).
What is special about the ‘Night Safari?
From what I read, you should not miss the night safari’s different animal trails.
For example, Tasmanian Devil Trail. During the night safari on this trail, you can watch several animals from Australia, and New Zealand.
To name a few wildlife:
- Possum
- All species of Marsupials that include the rare Tasmanian Devil
Well, it certainly doesn’t look like a devil to me. Maybe, in the dark, this black marsupial is scary
Other animals in this species include the Sugar Glider, and Brush-tailed Possum.
The range of nocturnal animals that you can spot during the night safari is pretty large and very impressive.
More Keeper Talks
Similar to the aquarium keeper talks, more such detailed guided tours are available at various times.
Here are some of the animals that Keeper Talks about:
- Wallaby
- Tasmanian Devil
The information you read thus far in this post will certainly make your children beg to plan a trip to Singapore, exclusively to see the Mandai River Wonders.
Your Singapore tour needs at least 5 days to see several more attractions, and eat at some of the best restaurants on the island.
